FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the appointment last for?

30 minutes typically, however we advise that you allow up to 45 minutes for your initial assessment.

What time is the last appointment?

5pm for an Initial Assessment.
6pm for a follow up appointment (subject to medical screening by Andy).

What should I wear / bring with me to change into?

Ideally…

  • Loose fitting clothing.
  • Shorts for lower limb problems and Sciatica.
  • Vest top for neck and shoulder problems.
  • 2 piece outfit with elasticated waist for lower back/lumbar problems.

Don’t worry if you forget. As any tests that could not be done, can be checked at a subsequent appointment if necessary.

Why do we ideally need to see the skin around the problem area?

Checking for joint and bony alignment, muscle spasm, muscle wasting, bruising, heat and redness is an important part of the examination, giving us clues about the structures involved and the severity of the problem. Reflexes and skin sensation may also need to be tested for some conditions. (Sciatica for example).
These are all difficult to check through outer clothing.

Can I bring a friend or family member with me to the appointment?

Yes absolutely.

The clinic also requests that patients under the age of sixteen are ideally seen with a person who has parental responsibility wherever possible please.

Is it normal to experience an increase in my symptoms after Physiotherapy Treatment?

Whilst we endeavor to improve your symptoms with our advice and treatment in the long term, it is not uncommon to get a short-term increase in your symptoms following treatment, sometimes up to 2-3 days afterwards.

This is most common following the initial assessment, as the sensitive structures are being tested and stressed as part of the examination process, in order to diagnose the problem. But may also occur after any treatment session.

Chronic, long-term symptoms, may also react to new movements / loading of structures. This is very common.

Your therapist will explain any likely reaction to treatment and suggest strategies for you to try to help with your symptoms.

Please discuss any post-treatment increase in symptoms with your therapist who will listen and adjust the treatment as appropriate.

Please feel free to ring or email the clinic between scheduled appointments if you have any concerns at all about your symptoms. Don’t wait and worry.
